Governing landscape quality in the Netherlands: recent developments

This paper describes recent developments in Dutch spatial planning. In the past decade this policy domain has gradually been shifted from a domain focussing on integrative and comprehensive plans to a system that mainly facilitates new (economic) developments. Many tasks and responsibilities have been decentralised from national to provincial authorities and this paper reflects on the role provinces can play in enhancing and protecting the new conglomerate of (urban) space, nature and landscape.
