invasieve exoten, landschap, effecten preventie

Risks of alien species to landscapes

Invasive alien species, landscape, impacts, prevention

Whereas numerous articles and books have been written about the impacts of invasive alien species on the environment, the economy and public health, much less has been published on their impacts on landscapes. This article presents an overview of such impacts worldwide, in Europe, and in the Netherlands. Although some alien species have deliberately been introduced for their positive effects on landscapes, other invasive aliens have historically done much damage, ranging from monocultures and the elimination of characteristic tree species to disruptive effects on water systems, soils, fire regimes and even the global climate. Today new risks to landscapes are emerging, e.g. associated with the New Silk Road between China and Europe. Since populations of invasive species are hard to control once they have established and spread, there is a good case for preventive policies based on risk analysis and the precautionary principle. Most relevant to landscapes is the trade in trees, shrubs, water plants, wood and wooden packages. The EU Regulation on invasive alien species has to be complemented with national policies by The Netherlands and other member states.
